Half Day Cycling A Taste of Rural Life

Located only 7km from the centre of Hue, Thanh Toan consists of a peaceful countryside where echoes of an ancient village, founded in the 16th century, is still very much visible on the landscape. Plus, there are temples to explore and a traditional way of life to absorb. You will only get a taste of true rural life through participating in some hands-on agricultural experience, so we meet the farmers in the field and learn some farming techniques. We then continue exploring the countryside, the village and the clan’s shrine house, before hoping into a sampan and going fishing using traditional techniques. We then hang out like a local on the intriguing tile-roofed bridge. This was built in the 17th century with the typical architectural style of Thuong Gia Ha Kieu, meaning the house is constructed above the bridge. We then go on a short cycling excursion, concluding a tour that provides an ideal insight into rural life you cannot get on the average tourist trail.

2 Days Hue Garden-House StayCation

The imperial city of Hue has been acclaimed by UNESCO as ‘a masterpiece of urban poetry’ and there is good reason why with its host of attractions that include its green Citadel, royal gardens, royal mausoleums, pagodas and beautiful homes. The latter were once the private residences for princes and princesses, high-ranking mandarins and wealthy families. It was from these places that the royal and aristocratic lifestyle spread to the ‘commoners’ and shaped Hue’s elegant way of life. Due to the pressure of urbanisation, population growth, as well as economic and lifestyle changes, Hue had been losing this treasure over the years, but in an effort to preserve this threatened heritage, we have been assisting local families to renovate their ancestor’s homes so they are preserved for posterity.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Arriving in Hue, we transfer to Kim Long village 10 km from the city centre.

Upon arrival at Garden House, we are greeted by our host and given the chance to refresh before our leisurely cycle along the village’s easy and green cycling trails that are rich in cultural heritage sites. Taking between two and four hours depending on the pace we set, with the help of our guide we stop at a local home where handicrafts are made and then continue to visit hidden temples and cultural relics such as Thien Mu Pagoda. We then return to our accommodation where we unwind with a relaxing herbal foot bath before savouring an authentic home-cooked dinner.

In the evening, we can practice some Vietnamese words with our host, listen to the calm and tranquillity of the countryside, or explore the recommended selection of books and movies about Hue.

Passing a peaceful night at the host family’s ancient house.

Waking up in the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside and start the day with a healthy breakfast with food selected from the garden.

We then have time to join in with some gardening activities with our host, go fishing at the nearby river, or immerse in a spiritual journey at the nearby pagoda. We bid our host “tam biet” before transferring to our next destination.

Please note that our accommodation in Kim Long village is west of Hue city and makes a convenient base to explore Hue’s highlights while enjoying the tranquillity of the countryside. Our accommodation is surrounded by a vast garden of bonsai and fruit trees and offers an authentic experience. It has two private rooms, with two toilets and bathrooms situated inside the house.
