A Day of Responsible Experiences in Phnom Penh

Get a fascinating insight into the authentic ways residents live diverse livelihoods through community-run initiatives in Phnom Penh. Slow down and appreciate the efforts of individuals and local enterprises that are helping local communities through the implementation of a variety of inspired projects. Participate in improving the lifestyles of underprivileged Khmer people, while promoting local arts and crafts at the same time. Develop a better understanding of Cambodia’s eco-friendly initiatives and help ensure a better future for the country and its people.

The tour will be conducted using an electric tuk-tuk to reduce carbon emissions. Your guide will meet you at the hotel lobby and you will board the vehicle to begin an experience that will provide a fascinating insight into the daily lives of the Khmer people as they conduct a responsible approach to living.

The first stop is the Toul Tompong (Street 464) area to witness the first refill shop in town. Dai Khmer, founded in 2014, is a social enterprise that supports women in Cambodia through the production of natural handmade products created from local fruits and herbs. These include soaps, creams, coconut oil and many more organic items used in daily lives.

Afterwards, we move to centrally located Street 178 where you will have the chance to see skilled artisans fashioning different types of sculptures. Several workshops exhibit and sell sculptures of Buddha and deities. You will even have the opportunity to join a hands-on stone carving session with a local artist.

Your last stop will be at Street 240, with a visit to two socially responsible outlets. The first is called A.N.D, which stands for ‘artisan designers’, a Cambodian fair-trade brand that collaborates and works with local artisans, some with disabilities. The products range from jewellery to clothing accessories. You will have an opportunity to interact with local women artists who design and manage the production of the clothes.

The second stop is at ‘Watthan Artisans’, a local social enterprise, established in 2004. This showcases the talents of disabled and disadvantaged Cambodian artisans, such as weavers, woodcarvers and tailors. This initiative helps to uplift their socio-economic status in society.

Before, returning to the hotel, we will enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Route
  • Duration: 5 hours, with departure at 8 am. Includes lunch;
  • This trail programme is operated daily on private basis with English-speaking guide.
  • Tours and transfers with English-speaking, licenced assistance;
  • Transportation for tour and transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, unless otherwise stated;
  • All entrance fees for visits as mentioned in the programme;
  • All applicable taxes and service charges;
  • All meals as indicated in the programme (food only).

This is one of our Sustainable Trails, an excursion that maximises positive impacts on local communities and minimises negative impacts on the environment in the following ways:

  • Transport alternatively – This experience includes travel by electric tuk-tuks, a unique and more sustainable way to view of the city;
  • Experience meaningfully – Participants on this tour contribute to preserving Cambodia’s arts and crafts traditions;
  • Make a difference – Visits to workshops stimulate employment and training opportunities for locals and marginalised people and it provides a chance for them to earn a ‘living wage’.

Private Half Day Tuol Sleng & Killing Fields

Take a sobering step back in time with a visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Cheung Ek Killing Fields. Tuol Sleng was a school in central Phnom Penh that served as S-21 during the Khmer Rouge reign. It operated as a detention and torture centre. Out of an estimated 20,000 prisoners, only seven survived. The rest were tortured and killed there, or sent to their death at Choeung Ek – the nearby killing field site. Much of the centre has been left as it was discovered in 1979. Many of the torture tools remain, shocking boards of photographs taken of victims as they enter stand in blood-splattered rooms, and tiny brick cells used to house prisoners remain intact. We then drive to the outskirts of the city to Choeung Ek. Almost 9,000 bodies were discovered at the mass graves, more commonly known as the Killing Fields. The chilling site now stands as a memorial and features a Buddhist stupa filled with human skulls retrieved from the fields.

Please note: Visitors to the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum are required to keep their knees and shoulders covered.
